Día de la Comunidad Valenciana

Yesterday on the 9th October, it was the Día de la Comunidad Valenciana which is celebrated each year. They celebrate the foundation of the city after Jamie I conquered Valencia in 1238 and it is a public holiday so I had the day off work.

There was a procession through the city which stopped off at the statue of King Jamie and ended in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. There were hundreds of people in the Plaza with Valencia flags, stickers and shirts waiting to see the mascletas which are really loud fireworks with huge bangs and booms. They started with a few very loud fireworks and then the main event started which consisted of fire crackers and fireworks which has been hung from a wire construction going off. There must have been hundreds and I've honestly never heard anything like it. The fire crackers released so much smoke, some of which was colourful, and the fireworks released what looked like glitter. It also lasted for a long time and much longer than I thought it would.

When it was over, everyone was clapping and cheering and everyone was happy to be their. I'm not a huge fan of fireworks but I'm so glad I went as it was fantastic to see how they celebrate Valencia day and be able to witness the day and the show.
