Year Abroad Blues

This is a negative post but when my Spanish teacher asks me why I've come back from 8 months in Spain speaking less Spanish than before I went I will refer her to this.

Firstly, Happy New Year, I'd like to say I can't believe it's 2015 already but the last 3 and a half months of 2014 dragged on. I can't believe I'm back in Spain already, being home for Christmas seems so far away and I've only been back one day. The hardest part of being away from home for me is being away from everyone I love. I miss my family and friends and it's especially hard as I had never lived away from home before coming here and so I'm still not used to not seeing my family everyday.

Saying that, being home for Christmas was fantastic and even the 10 hours it took me to get home were fine as I was so excited. It was so great spending time with my family and friends and even just being at home doing nothing was ace and the fact I didn't have to cook, clean or wash was an added bonus. I was so stressed out that something would happen and my flight would be delayed or cancelled due to the weather but thankfully my flight was fine. Christmas is my favourite time of the year and this year didn't disappoint, plus I had a great night for New Year with my friends.

It was so hard to say goodbye again when I didn't know how long it would be before I came home or saw people I knew again which added even more dread to the 14 hour travel time it took me to get from home back to my flat in Valencia which was very long, tiring and emotional. Considering Valencia is the third biggest city in Spain, it is such a pain to get to as I have to fly to Alicante and then get a train and due to the train times it left me with a three hour wait in Alicante train station. On top of that it was crap coming back to a city where I don't know anyone or have any friends and where I'm not even practising my Spanish because everyone seems to know I'm English before I start speaking and if not they soon change to their broken English when they hear my accent. Plus everyone in my school speaks English. People say that your third year abroad is the best year of your life, well honestly so far it has been crap and I cannot wait to get back home in May.

However, on the more positive side since I got my student loan and grant yesterday, I've already booked flights for my mum to come and see me for a week in February and for me to go home for a weekend at the end of March before I come home for Easter. Also two of my friends are coming to Valencia at the beginning of March which I'm so excited for so at the minute the longest I have to go at one time is 5 weeks before I see someone I know or go home before I finish in May.
